Aerosol is an important factor of the climate change and air pollution. Ground observation can acquire accurate optical character information of aerosol, but this method can only be carried out on limited ground stations; it is impossible to obtain spatial covering and distribution information. However, satellite remote sensing can make up the shortage of ground observation.Observation data on the MODIS satellite includes abundant spatial-temporal changing information of optical character of aerosol. Using aerosol optical depth (AOD) from MODIS satellite has special advantages, because it is the important source of regional aerosol optical depth information which is lacking in routine data. Air pollution index (API) is an index for evaluating air quality condition and can directly reflect the air pollution condition of near-surface. Achieving the conversion between AOD and API is the essential link of using satellite remote sensing technology on monitoring atmospheric particulates pollution, so discussing the relationship of AOD and API is very important. In this article, firstly, using aerosol data observed by sun photometer on the ground to validate the aerosol optical depth products from MODIS, the accuracy of aerosol products inverted by satellite remote sensing technology is discussed. Then, analyzing the relationship of API and AOD, and studying the relation between aerosol optical depth from MODIS and air pollution index of city by distinct seasons, the model is correspondingly founded. Lastly, introducing meteorological factor to rectify the relation which is more studied, the better accuracy of model is acquired. The result proves that using AOD monitored by satellite remote sensing technology to indicate the air quality of city is feasible.
