The thesis mainly focused on the synthesis, characterization of rare earth complexes of Schiff base ligands. It is composed of the following two parts.Firstly, two tetradentate ligands were designed and applied. Fourteen different complexes were synthesized. They are [Nd(bppda)2](14).(H2bppda=N,N'-bis(2-pyrrylmethylidene)-1,2-phenylenediamine; H2bpch=N,N'-bis[(1H-pyrrlo-2-yl)methylene]cyclohexane).The molecular structures of complexes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 were determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex 3 was well characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Complexes 1,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,14 were confirmed by elemental analysis. The complex 13 was a bisligands coordinated titanium complex. Complex 14 was Lanthanide–cobalt heterometallic complex. These molecular structures were novel.Secondly, a pentadentate Schiff base ligand L3(L3=N1,N3- [bis(pyrrole -2-yl) methyl- ene]diethylenetriamine ) was synthesized. Three novel complexes (15, 16, 17) were synthesized. The complex (15) was a bisligand coordinaited mononuclear samarium complex; the nitrogen of pyrrole was not deprotonated. Based on this undeprotonated hydrogen, lots of new reactions were designed. Complex 15 could react with Ln(Ln=Y, Dy), and another two new compounds were synthesized. It's interesting to find that the new complexes could be used in the intermolecular hydroamination reaction of alkynes. An oxygen atom bridged binuclear erbium complex Er2(μ-O)( C14H17N5) (THF)( 16) was synthesized. Each erbium was coordinate with a ligand and one THF molecular. The complex(17) was a ligand bridged binuclear ytterbium complex.Yb1 was coordinated with a ligand and a THF molecular, Yb2 was coordinated with a ligand and a nitrogen atom in NH2Si(CH3)2. It's amazing that the silicon atom in NH2Si(CH3)2 molecular was connected to the nitrogen in the bridged ligand. The complexes 15, 16, 17 are the products of the same ligands of the different lanthanide metal, but the structures are different. The molecular structures of complexes 15, 16, 17 were determined by x-ray diffraction.
