In this dissertation, the design, synthesis and characterisation of a serial of multidentate ligands containing N, S atoms and their transition metal complexes are discussed. It comprises mainly following three aspects:1. Using either 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridine or 2,6-dimethylpyridine as precursor, we synthesise an organic ligand, 2,6-mercaptanpyridine. Its reaction with iron carbonyl compound gives a triiron carbonyl complex, [Fe3(μ3-S)2(CO)9]. The complex is characterised using infrared spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. It is also electrochemically studied towards the catalytic reduction of proton.2. Starting with 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl benzene, we synthesise a novel ligand containing both N and S atoms, which shows selective omplexation towards Cu2+. The reaction of this ligand with pyridine-2,6-dicarbaldehyde leads to the synthesis of macrocyclic Schiff base complexes under the templation of transition metal ions. All compounds/complexes are characterised using elemental analysis, IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies and electrochemistry. Possible compositions of the synthesised transition metal complexes are also proposed.3. Anthracene macrocyclic derivative is synthesised using anthracene and 2-aminemethylpyridine as main precursors. Preliminary characterisation for some of the synthesised compounds is carried out using IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies.
