In this paper, bamboo charcoal-ferrate composites with adsorption and magnetismwere prepared by combining bamboo charcoal (BC) and ferrate (MnFe2O4 and CuFe2O4).The preparation conditions of the composites were studied, and the optimal preparationconditions were described. The configuration and magnetic characteristic of thecomposites were characterized. The adsorptive capability for dyestuff molecules (acid redB and methylthionine chloride) and metal ions (Fe2+,Cr(Ⅵ),Ni2+,Pb2+) was investigatedand the regenerating function was evaluated in order to develop a kind of bamboocharcoal ferrate composites with both good adsorptive capability and favorable magneticcharacteristic which could be recovered by magnetic separation technique. The resultsshowed that:(1)The bamboo charcoal ferrate composites MnFe2O4-BC and CuFe2O4-BCmagnetized by MnFe2O4 and CuFe2O4 prepared by chemistry-coprecipitation methodpossessed favorable magnetic characteristic which can be recovered by magneticseparation technique.(2)The bamboo charcoal and ferrate can be combined by two methods which aredirect compounding method and magnetic reagent compounding method. The optimalconditions of direct compounding method were as follows: pH value of soliquoid was 13,water bath temperature was above 90℃, the remaining time in the water bath was 4 h,the time standing in the air was 1 h, and the optimal conditions of magnetic reagentcompounding method were: pH value of magnetic reagent was about 5, using CaCl2 as aactivator. Comparing the two methods, the adsorptive capability of composites combinedby direct compounding method was better than that of magnetic reagent compoundingmethod, but the magnetic characteristic of composites combined by magnetic reagentcompounding was excellent.(3)MnFe2O4-BC possessed favorable adsorptive capability for methylthioninechloride, and the adsorptive capability of CuFe2O4-BC toward acid red B was preferable.(4)The adsorptive capability of bamboo charcoal ferrate composites was better thanthat of bamboo charcoal and MnFe2O4-BC had better adsorptive capability for the metal ions than CuFe2O4-BC. The order of bamboo charcoal ferrate composites of adsorptivecapability for metal ions was Fe3+>Cr(Ⅵ)>Ni2+>Pb2+.(5)CuFe2O4-BC and MnFe2O4-BC still possessed good adsorption ability for acid redB and Cr(Ⅵ) after regeneration.
