Over the past two decades, nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have been of great interest due to their potential applications in the fields of optical information processing, optical sensing, and telecommunications. Inorganic-organic hybrid material through sol-gel strategy offers the great opportunity for the development of the NLO materials. Incorporateting the NLO chromophores into the inorganic matrix by one or more covalent bonds can prevent the relaxation of the non-centro-symmetric chromophore alignment induced by electric field. In this thesis, the basic theories of NLO and the development of NLO material are briefly introduced. The molecular design theory and recent progress of chomophore research are mentioned as well, based on which three chromophore IND ,DCO, DCMO containing indane and pryan are synthesized. The βCTμg values of thechromophores are evaluated by solvatochromic method, which display 1558×10-30, 5050×10-30 and 7902×10-30 esu·D respectively, more higher than DR1. The chromophore IND and DCO react with 3-isocyanatopropyl-triethoxysilane (ICTES) to give alkoxysilane dyes (ASD). All the structure of chromophore and ASD are confirmed by elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H-NMR. The transparency and thermal stability of the compound are detected by UV, TGA, and DSC.The fluorescence spectra of the DCO and DCM (familiar fluorescence dye) indicate the same fluorescence exhibition of the two molecules. Comparing with the spectra of the ASD-DCO, we discover that the highest fluorescence intensity as well as the corresponding concentration increased due to the silicon matrix. Two new hybrid materials are prepared by sol-gel with TEOS, and the film is obtained by spin coating on the indium-tin (ITO). The second harmonic coefficients of the hybrid films are measured by in situ second harmonic generation (SHG)measurement. The hybrid films containing chromophore DCO exhibit large optical nonlinearity (d33 is 56.2 pm/V), and the half-decay temperature at 150℃. That present advantage of the hybrid material obviously.
