The large amount of industrial and domestic sewage discharging into a marine system has brought extremely large pressure of off-shore marine eco-environment in recent years. It is difficult to distinguish the source tested in tradition monitoring of water sample by bacteriology method. But it can be used to analyse the sewage in the discharge points in our country and distinguish sources with faecal sterol as biomarker,.In this thesis, it is choosen to analysis the biomarker of faecal sterol in water sample and sediment by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-single ion monitoring (GC-MS-SIM) with SPE technology and build the ratio index system of of faecal sterol.Coprostanol,cholesterol,epi-coprostanol,24-ethylcoprostanol ,24-ethyl-epi-coprosta nol and so on are detected in the water samples from Fujian , Zhejiang and Guangxi and sediments from Dalian bay. Then it is used as biomaker to distinguish environmentalpollution soures.It is better to determine faecal sterol by GC-MS-SIM than GC-flame ionisationdetection (FID) and total ion current (TIC) in Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The precision and accuracy of faecal sterol in parallel samples and qualitative analysis of water sample detected by GC-MS-SIM and the ratio of faecal sterol distinguished from soures of human and animals is selectivite, and specific and feasible. The result shows faecal sterol as biomarker to distinguish the soure of faeces in water sample is improving the monitoring technology of key pollution source in our coutry and carrying out the deep reseach of off-shore marine environment removing conversion.
