The separation process is important in chemical, petrochemical, medical and biochemical industries. The azeotropic mixture cannot be separated by normal distillation. But extractive distillation is valid for them. This paper summarizes the principle of extractive distillation and choice of the extractive solvent, and the research progress and the application of benzene and thiophen in recent years. The continuous extractive distillation experiment to separate benzene and thiophen was carried out with N-methylprolinodone(NMP) as extractive solvent. The effect of operation parameters of reflux ratio and solvent ratio on the separation has been studied primarily. Then, the isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium dates of Benzene+1-Hexen, Benzene+ 1-Hepten, Benzene+1-Octen and the ternary mixtures of Benzene + 1-Hexen + N-Methyl-2-prolindone (NMP) , Benzene+ 1-Hepten + NMP,Benzene + 1-Octen + NMP are measured by using a CE-2 vapor–liquid equilibrium still. All the ternary VLE data were obtained. The results supplemente the VLE dates of benzene+ alkene and benzene+ alkene + NMP. They are significant to the actual process with NMP as the solvent.
