A bacteria, named Alcaligenes faecalis, which was separated from the activate sludge of Tianjin gas work factory was used through out our work. Researches of substrates biodegradation were carried out under different condition and the optimal temperature and pH for phenol or m-cresol degradation were specified as: 30℃and 7.0,respectively. Under this situation, the maximum biodegradation ability of this bacteria for phenol was 1600mg/L and for m-cresol was 250mg/L.Kinetics study was performed using phenol and m-cresol as the sole carbon and energy, the initial phenol and m-cresol concentration were varied from 0 to 1600mg/L and 0 to 250mg/L, respectively. Haldane type substrate inhibit model was used to simulate the cell growth on phenol or m-cresol, as for the substrate degradation, not only the contribution of substrate degradation on cell growth, but also on cell maintenance and product formation were considered. The Matlab software was used to nonlinear regression and got the model parameters, the result showed that the models can well describe the experimental results. As the composition of the real wastewaters were always very complicated, deficient of single substrate research was obvious, in view of this , we took a deep examination of Alcaligenes faecalis growth and substrates interaction in phenol and m-cresol mixture. Investigation was carried out over a wide range of initial substrates concentration (phenol 0-1400mg/L and m-cresol 0-200mg/L), based on the enzymatic kinetics and pseudo-steady assumption new cell growth and substrates degradation models were created, nonlinear regression was used to got the model parameters and the ultimate kinetic equations for overall cell growth and substrates degradation in the mixed system were attained. From the comparison we found that the model agreed well with our experimental data.
