Primary Study On The Environmental Problem In The Urban Fringe Of Wuhu City

The paper reviews the development of urban pattern theory at first. It indicates that the rural and urban boundary is transiting from a dualistic structure to a contemporary city structure which gradually blurs the borderlines between rural and urban areas. Then it refers to and analyses the concepts of urban fringe defined both at home and abroad, researches into the relationships between urban fringe and suburb, rural-urban combining zone and rural-urban fringe, etc. However, these concepts intersect with each other in some way from the perspective of territorial sphere. After reviewing the achievements on dividing the urban fringe, the paper believes that the dynamic of urban fringe should not be overemphasized, and the sphere of it should be divided in connection with the urban administrative mapping.In part 2, the paper introduces the general situation and history of Wuhu City, which once was a small town along Qingyi River, has become an important city of industry and commerce against Changjiang River. And it analyses and divides the urban spatial structure and the urban fringe of Wuhu.Using previous references of environmental monitoring, part 3 estimates the environmental quality of atmosphere, water, soil and noise in the fringe of Wuhu City. Through the historical and regional comparative methods, the paper finds that the pollution of Wuhu hasn't become worse in spite of the industrialization, when the city was in the process of urbanization. On the contrary, some pollution indexes are a little lower, and most of the other environmental elements are excellent. Otherwise, individual water pollution indexes of some rivers and lakes are not quite optimistic. The environmental quality of atmosphere in the urban fringe is not as good as that in the city proper and suburbs.
