The collagen has been widely used as medical materials because of its properties of bioactivity and biodegradation. However the existing extraction yield of collagen from fresh hide is only 5-8%. Collagen membrane has some deficiencies , such as high hydroscopicity and deformation in water, which make its applications restricted. In this study, the methods of high extraction yield of collagen from fresh bovine hides were investigated, then the properties of obtained collagen were characterized and the properties of collagen membrane were improved by means of blending.Extracting collagen from fresh hide at high extraction yield on the premise that the hide should be pretreated properly. Fresh bovine hide was pretreated by three different methods, namely besmearing enzyme on the flesh side, enzyme on the grain side after liming and using hydrogen peroxide. The effects of different pretreatment on unhairing and collagen fibers dispersion were compared in virtue of shrinkage temperature and microscope investigation. The results indicated that both the pretreatment of besmearing enzyme on the flesh side and the pretreatment of hydrogen peroxide couldn't remove fuzzes, the former just removed a little bit of interfibrillar substance, whereas hydrogen peroxide could remove more interfibrillar...
