Nanostructures , particularly one-dimensional nanomaterials have received intensive interests due to their novel physical, chemical, and biological properties as well as the potential applications in nanodevices. Many attentions have been paid to the synthesis and applications of the nanomaterials of semiconductor oxide for their unique and novel optical, photoelectricity, catalysis, piezoelectricity properties. ZnO and MgO as typical oxide materials, especially their nano structures which possess of many peculiar properties, have received wide interests.Based on reviewing of the recent progress of zinc oxide and magnesium oxide nanostructures, we systematically studied the synthesis and characterization of zinc oxide nanowires, boron nanowires, ZnO/B hierarchical hetero-nanostructures and magnesium oxide nanostructures. Some results have been obtained:Zinc oxide nannowires were fabricated by carbothermal route and the optical property of a single nannowire was investigated: the 633 nm wavelength light and the fluorescence excited by 325 nm wavelength light are well confined and guided along the nannowires. No obvious scattering is observed along the whole length of the nannowires in spite of the strong guided intensity, indicating the low optical loss of the wire.Crystalline boron nanowires were fabricated by thermal evaporation and the influences of the growth conditions including gas flow, souce temperature and collecting temperature were investigated: single crystal hexagonal and tetragonal boron nanowires were collected at high and low temperature zone when source temperature above 1200 ℃, respectivey;just amorphous boron nanowires were obtained when source temperature below 1200℃.ZnO/B hierarchical hetero-nanostructures were achieved by two-step thermal evaporation ZnO and boron. The morphology and structure of hierarchical hetero-nanostructures were investigated.Magnesium oxide nanostructures were fabricated by thermal evaporation and theinfluences of the growth conditions including collecting temperature and substrates were investigated: magnesium oxide nanowires and nanocube were collected at high and low temperature zone when source temperature above 800 °C, respectivey.Optical property of a single magnesium oxide nanowire was investigated: the 633-nm wavelength light is well confined and guided along the nannowires. No obvious scattering is observed along the whole length of the nannowires in spite of the strong guided intensity.Magnesium oxide nano particles were fabricated with magnesium nitrate and citric acid as the starting reagents by the sol-gel method. Magnesium borate nannowires were sythesised when added boric acid into the starting reagents.
