Reluctance probe has been widely applied as a new technique for its features ofacute and rapid response, strong adaptive ability and on-line, in-situ real-timemeasurement. But the complex structures, high prices and limitations of the probematerials hinder the further applications of the probe and rare reports in this field canbe seen. This project is brought out on the basis of the National Basic Research Program (alsocalled 973 Program) and the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation ofChina. And the main purpose is to develop the applications of the reluctance probetechnique on monitoring the corrosions of metals in natural environments. In this paper reluctance probe was combined with a simulatedcorrosion-accelerating box, thus an atmospheric corrosion measurement system ofreluctance probe was established and some ideas and advices on the furtherdevelopment of the system were given. The results shows that with the sensitive, rapid response and accurate measurement, the detecting system established above canbe qualified to monitor the atmospheric corrosion of metals. The corrosion behavior of carbon steel was studied using the system inatmosphere contaminated by sulfide, nitride and chloride. The results show that therelative corrosiveness of the pollutants is ranked in the order: SO2-4>Cl->NO-3.The effect of mixed medium on the corrosion behavior of the steel cannot beconsidered as the additive effects of the single mediums and the mechanism may bedue to complex cooperating actions. It is the first time to study the corrosion behaviors of carbon steels in varioussteeping fluids of polyurethane foam, with combination of reluctance probe andelectrochemical measurements. Both results of reluctance probe measurements andlinear polarization tests show that the steeping fluid of polyurethane foam withinhibitor has obvious adsorbent effect, in which the corrosion rate of carbon steel isthe lowest. EIS measurements show that steeping fluids of polyurethane foam arehigh-resistance systems, they all show inhibiting effects to some extent except thesteeping fluid of polyurethane foam deriving from oilfield. Reluctance probe cannot only measure the corrosion rates of carbon steels in steeping fluids, but also canbe used to evaluate the effects of inhibitors. The results of reluctance probe tests are inaccordance with that of electrochemical measurements.
