The complexes of multidentate amide and Schiff base aroused people's interest long ago because of the direct connection with organism and the special chemical property. The multidentate chelating ligand containing nitrogen and oxygen heteroatoms have the better ligand capability with transition metal and rare earth metal cation. This kind of complexes are special useful for catalysis, electrochemical activity and so on. They often have better fluorescence and may be used as luminophor. Amide is similar to small peptide. It is the model compound of pankrin and oxidase and is important to simulating the mechanism of vital process. Schiff base is a kind of very important ligand. It can coordinate with most of metal to form complexes. These complexes are widely used in catalysis, medicaments and new materials.Starting from ethylenediamine and L-phenylalanine, N,N'-bis(L-phenylalanyl) ethane-1,2-diamine was synthesized. Several synthesis routes were tried and the better economical and handy way was found. And then N,N'-bis(L-phenylalanyl)ethane-l,2 -diamine was co-ordinated with transition metals. Several novel complexes were gotten. The characterizaion of the complexes was accomplished by elemental analyses, infrared spectrum, ultraviolet spectrum. The single crystal of Cu(II) complexes was even gotten from methanol and the structural was analysed by X-ray structural studies. It is shown by X-ray structural studies that the crystal is of the tetragonal system and the space group is 14. The lattice parameters are as following: a = 25.044(4) A ,b = 25.044(4) A, c = 8.707(3) A; α = 90.00(2) ° , β = 90.00(2) ° , γ = 90.000(10)° ; V=5461(2)A~3,Dc=1.365g/cm~3 Z=8.After N,N'-bis(L-phenylalanyl)ethane- 1,2-diamine was synthesized, the novel chiral Schiff base was gotten by letting N,N'-bis(L-phenylalanyl)ethane- 1,2-diamine react with salicylal. And characterized the ligand by melting point, elemental analyses, infrared spectrum, ultraviolet spectrum, mass spectrum, optical rotation, 'H-NMR. Then the production reacted with transition metal ions. Some new complexes weregotten. Through elemental analyses, infrared spectrum, ultraviolet spectrum, they were compared with the ligand and the possible co-ordinate atoms were guessed.
