Titanium-pillared montmorillonite is a new catalytic material with large surface area, unique pore structure and very low cost .it is used in a number of important industries, especially in petroleum processing, chemical industry and environmental science. The basic structures and properties of montmorillonite were introduced in this paper. Also, the montmorillonite was modified with sodium salt to increasing the cation exchange ability of montmorillonite (CEC). Ti-PILCs were prepared in a solution with polymeric titanium cations formed by particle hydrolysis of titanium salt in dilute hydrochloric acid. The characterizations of Ti-PILCs were determined by XRD, BET method, FT-IR and TG-DSC. The dilute hydrochloric acid concentration, Ti/clay ratio, H/Ti ratio, the pillaring reaction temperature, the aging time of pillaring agent and the initial concentration of clay greatly affect the formation of Ti-PILC.Ti-PILCs were obtained with pillaring agents were prepared from TiCL; and HC1, using purified Ca-montmorillonite in Hunan as the starting clay. The result of XRD shows that titanium pillared montmorillonite with large pore structure also can be synthesized using Ca-montmorillonite (dooi=1.53nm) by hydrolysis method. When the initial concentration of clay was 0.5%, pH=1.10, Ti/clay ratio was 15mmol/g, the pillaring reaction temperature was 20 癈 and the aging time of pillaring agent was 4 hour, Ti -PILC with large pore structure (dooi=2.92nm) was obtained, and its surface area was up to 266.0m2/g.Ti-PILCs were also obtained with pillaring agent prepared from Ti(n-C4H9O)4 and HC1 by Sol-Gel, using purified Na-montmorillonite in Hubei as the starting clay. The results of XRD shows that titanium pillared montmorillonite with the largest pore structure (dooi=3.59nm) can be gained using Ti(n-C4H9O)4 as titanium resource, when Ti/clay=15mmol/g, H/TH2.5mol/mol, [HCl]=5mol/L and at the room temperature. The largest surface area is also up to 409.1m2/g.Compared with other results in this field in this nation, our results have been improved in different degree and on the top of this field at home.
