The composite of polymer and metal is widely used in the Industry fields for its super properties; meanwhile, there exist enormous variety in nature between the two materials. In an attempt to investigate the interfacial characteristics between carbonyl-containing polymer and metal, with X-rays Photoelectron Spectra (XPS) and Reflection Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy (RAIR), as well as mechanical tests, the reaction between three kinds of polymer and metal were studied respectively.By probing the carbon atoms and oxygen atoms containing in different layer of EVA/(A1, Cu) composite with XPS, the quantitative variety in different layer and binding energy (BE) shift illuminate the complex reaction between the ester and metal is occurred, mainly in monodentate form. Combining RAIR analysis and QUARTIR method, the precise orientation of the carbonyl closely touched on the metal surface was calculated, then, the molecular conformation in interface layer is drawn. The quantitative calculation is applied in the analysis of the relationship among the Content of the complex reactions, the concentration of VA and the adhesion strength, and the result shows that, when the concentration of VA is low, the adhesion strength improved with the rise of the Content of complex reactions; meanwhile, when the concentration of VA is high, the adhesion strength of composites is determined by EVA shearing stress. The XPS investigation of the SAA/A1 show that the BE of the two oxygen, characteristics atoms of carboxylic acid group, is shifted about 1 ev, lower than 2ev, which means a resonance hybrid conformation, the character of carboxylate structure;on the contrary, in SAA/Cu, no resonance hybrid is discovered, and the BE lower shifting show the complex structure is the mainly existing formation of the carboxylic acid group in composite interface. The result of the RAIR analysis of SAA/Cu show the extent of complex is lower with the AA content rising, for dimerized carbonxylic acid group causing by hydrogen bond destroyed the complex structure; no apparently AA content influence is noticed in SAA/A1, for the hydrogen bond is weak than ionic bond which is formed between the SAA and Aluminum surface. On the other hand, the extent of SAA/Cu complex is higher than SAA/A1, and thus, it testified the former result: the complex structure is the mainly conformation of the carboxylic acid group in SAA/Cu composite interface. The RAIR result testified the multi-complex in the EMAA/Fe composite, and static reaction between carboxylate ion and copper in EMAA/Cu.
