Power ultrasound has been successfully used to degrade the organic pollutants in water and more and more water treatment experts all round the world start to study the ultrasonic irradiation technology since the late of 1980's. Ultrasonic irradiation is a new and potential study field of advanced oxidation technology in water treatment. In this dissertation the recent studies on the degradation of organic pollutants by ultrasonic irradiation and associated technology were reviewed. In this research, we elected effluent of Kun Ming making-gas plant by coking. Using the ultrasonic irradiation-activated sludge process we have degrade nitrogen and organic pollutants of carbonization effluent effectively. The influence factors of the ultrasonic degradation effect such as initial pH. initial concentration, species of aerated gas and ultrasonic population have been investigated. The mechanism, kinetic of elected nitrogen and biodegradability of the carbonization effluent have been explored. Our study result is summarized as follows:(1) The ultrasonic degradation effect is high and the initial pH, initial concentration, species of aerated gas and ultrasonic population have strong affection on the degradation effect.(2) OH radical scavenger has little affection on the degradation effect of the nitrogen of the carbonization effluent. The nitrogen of the carbonization effluent are mainly destructed by pvrolytic decomposition in the cavitation bubble.(3) the nitrogen of the carbonization effluent have some leaching in the ultrasonic degradation. From analysis of the experimental results, the ultrasonic degradation rates of the nitrogen of the carbonization effluent appear to follow pseudo second order reaction kinetic.(4) Compared with the activated sludge process alone ,the combination of the ultrasonic irradiation and activated sludge process can increase the degradation rate of the CODcr(initial CODcr concentration is 807mg/L) from 45% to 81%. The oxygen consuming rate of the carbonization effluent is strongdecreased in the presence of the activated sludge, this shows the carbonization effluent has not biotoxication behind the ultrasonic irradiation. In this research, we have founded the whole laboratory equipment and the laboratory technique and attained the preliminary test consequent by water quality model.
