Abstract: Based on the analyses to the sediment samples from different places of the middle and lower reaches of Huaihe River, we obtained the concentration data of Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Zn, Ba, Mn, Be and Tl elements. Making use of these data, we studied the distribution characteristics of heavy metals in sediments from along-coast, droopy coast and vertical direction. At the same time, by combining the geochemical properties of the sediments, such as pH's value, grain size, mineral components and so on, these property relations to heavy metal concentrations were analyzed. The results showed that the heavy metal distribution obviously were affected by the man-made pollution source and the water driving force; that Mn together with Co, Zn, Pb, Tl, Ni took on the same alternation tendency in the sediments; that most heavy metal concentrations obviously correlated to the tiny particles of 20 μ m and the mineral component contents in the sediments.
