Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to determine the current status of library media services in Virginia's public schools. To achieve this purpose, the following questions were asked: (1) To what degree are the library media services outlined in the Guide to Library Media Services in Virginia Public Schools being implemented in public schools in Virginia? (2) Does the amount of funding affect the level of service offered by the school library media center? (3) Does the presence or absence of district level support affect the level of service? (4) Does the building library media specialist's level of education affect the level of service? (5) Does the size of the building library media staff affect the level of service?;Based on a 77 percent return, the results of the study showed a significant difference between the four service areas of students, teachers, administrators, and community members. A significant difference was also found for district level support, although the interaction of district level support and service area was not significant. No significant difference was found between the level of funding for per pupil expenditures and the level of service. There was also no significant difference between the library media specialist's level of education and the level of service. A significant difference was found to exist between the interaction of number of library media specialists employed and the community services area. No significant difference was found for the number of library media specialists employed and the other service areas, nor was a significant difference found for number of clerical aides employed.;A questionnaire based on the services outlined in the Guide to Library Media Services in Virginia Public Schools was developed and mailed to 311 building level library media specialists.
