Abstract/Summary:
It is not known or determined if attending an evidenced-based communication strengthening workshop, for a specific medical/surgical unit at a large acute care facility in eastern NC, aimed at decreasing workplace incivility among nurses, would increase the quality of care delivered by nurses to decrease patient falls. The lack of teamwork and respectful communication among nurses, due to workplace incivility, breaks down the nurses' relationships with other nursing staff, results in harm to patients, and lessens the nurses' desires to continue to work in the field of nursing. The purpose of this project was to determine if attending an evidenced-based communication strengthening workshop, for a specific medical/surgical unit at a large acute care facility in eastern NC, aimed at decreasing workplace incivility among nurses, would increase the quality of care delivered by nurses to decrease patients' falls. The oppressed group model was used as a foundation for this project. The design is a quantitative pre-and posttest survey that allowed for a comparison of the intervention and falls outcome, pre-and post. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings showed that the workshop improved civility on this medical/surgical unit, but did not show a significant correlation between the civility and patient falls. The practice improvement project presented an overall increase in the mean scores from the pre-test survey to the post-test of 5.50, p < 0.001. This data supports that an evidenced-based communication strengthening workshop may be helpful to decrease nursing incivility and the negative impacts it can have on patient safety.
