Abstract/Summary:
Social Media networking is the next frontier in educational policy. A plethora of issues has arisen in regard to social media practices on the part of educators in public school systems. There is a lack of regulation for use of social media across the nation, resulting in court challenges brought by individual teachers, teachers' unions, ACLU, and other social agencies against many school districts. Nebulous policies have led to confusion among educators and school boards. Confusion can be dangerous in the public education arena—creating a climate of mistrust, misunderstanding, and misconception.;This executive position paper examines policies governing social media use in several public school districts, the ramifications of social networking for teachers and districts, and the vital need for meticulous, clear policies governing the use of social media for all personnel employed within the public school system. Recommendations and guidelines for policy development and implementation of appropriate social networking are made based on examination of relevant court cases and rulings, current social networking policies among a variety of school districts with an emphasis on Delaware social networking policies and state policies for public employees.;These recommendations are the first step in the process of developing a social media policy for the Seaford School District. It is the intention of the author that this executive position paper lead to the creation of a draft of a social media policy by the Seaford Board of Education to be implemented during the 2012–2013 school year.
