Given the growing demands of global economy, selecting and training employees for effective cross-cultural assignments are becoming an important task to gain competitive advantages for many multinational companies(MNCs).This thesis examines the relationship between cultural intelligence(CQ)and cross-cultural adjustment(CCA)by focusing on the mediating effects of dynamic cross-cultural competencies including cultural flexibility, relational skills, and reduced ethnocentrism. It also explores the role of social media usage in between CQ and CCA.The data for the study was collected from 114 Korean expatriates working in Beijing, using a field survey. The result of this study revealed that cultural flexibility and relational skills had strong effect in transforming expatriates' CQ into work and interaction adjustment.Reduced ethnocentrism also helped to transfer CQ into interaction adjustment. However,CQ was not significantly related to non-work general adjustment of expatriates in Beijing.Using social media for acquiring and sharing information was found to be useful for expatriates to enhance dynamic cross-cultural competencies. The findings of this thesis have theoretical contribution to the extension of CQ literature as well as managerial contribution to the MNCs.Especially, the multinational companies operating in Beijing might find the study results useful for selecting and training expatriates. |
