Mark Twain(1835-1910)was an important American novelist, essayist and cultural activist from the mid-19 th century to the early 20 th century. He has created 10 medium-length novels and nearly 100 short stories in his life.In addition,he has published many autobiographies, memoirs, and travel notes. His novel creation is his main literary achievement, which makes him literary master, and it has been known for its unique style, distinctive theme and profound cultural implication in American literature and world literature. Many American writers and critics, including Faulkner,Hemingway,T.S.Eliot,have highly valued his novel creation, and determined that his creation is the foundation of American literary tradition and a major importance for later American literature.Their evaluation led to the research question of this paper: What is the main basis for famous writers and critics to make such evaluations on Twain's novel creation? What are the elements of Twain's novel art that have lasting artistic charm and aesthetic value? What is the mechanism by which these elements play a role in Twain's novel world? What is the significance of this mechanism for explaining the laws of the novel? In view of the fact that many critics have deliberately emphasized the imagery features of his creations,we naturally focus on the imagery of Twain's novels. We find that Mark Twain's novel image has an important founding significance in the period when the American national literary tradition was initially formed. This also means that the image description contained in his novel creation has important research value. This value has its reasons for the position of Twain in the history of American national literature, the establishment of the status of American literature in the world literature, and the composition of the overall form of world literature. At the same time, this kind of image description has obvious characteristics of individuality and systemization, not only in comparison with other American writers at the same time, but also in comparison with the creation of novels that are quite common in the history of world literature. In view of this situation, this thesis will focus on the image description contained in Twain's novels(mainly composed of novels and supplemented by short stories),and investigate and study the causes, characteristics and artistic skills of the images of their novels. It also has rich and profound connotations,as well as the aesthetic contribution of his novel imagery to American literature and American culture. It is expected to make an objective investigation and theoretical summary of the experience of its image creation, and provide classic examples and useful lessons for the development of Chinese literature. To study the image of Twain's novels,it is necessary to rely on the definition and understanding of the concept of imagery.Based on the concept of Chinese classical imagery, this paper forms the theoretical perspective of the image ofTwain's novels by means of the main imagery theories of Chinese dynasties.Based on this,it examines and interprets the imagery of Mark Twain's novels in order to dig deep the deeper meaning and personal formal skills into the image of MarkTwain's novels, and explore the dynamic factors that drive Mark Twain's creation, that is,the factors that promote his artistic creation in Mark Twain's personal experience and personality traits, and the historical requirements for the creation ofAmerican national literature in the reality of American society. The specific research content includes the following aspects:First of all,in order to solve the premise problems of academic research, this article gives a brief description of some important concepts involved in the first chapter. These concepts include imagery, core imagery, symbolic art,and Chinese traditional imagery theory. In the process of combing the conceptual category,we find that the concept of imagery formed in Chinese tradition and the concept of imagery in Western countries have certain differences in connotation and extension. In the ancient times,Western society rarely discussed imagery.Aristotle also pays attention to this artistic factor in the Poetics mainly from the drama image, that is,the form and costume of the actors. In the ancient Roman lyric poets, although many images such as natural mountains and rivers and gods were portrayed, they did not reach the enthusiasm for symbolic methods in modern times;in China, there is another trend. As early as in the era of the formation of the Book of Songs and Chu Ci,the poet strongly felt the correspondence between the Tao and the image and the rhetoric. In particular, the philosophical ethics of the school of Laozhuang have had a profound and far-reaching impact on the imagery of ancient China. When using the traditional Chinese aesthetic image theory to analyze and explain the image of Twain's novels, this paper not only considers the difference between Chinese and foreign imagery concepts, but also focuses on the use of the two,so that the analysis of the text is fully reasonable and necessary.Secondly,in order to explore the personal causes of Twain's novel image creation, this paper analyzes and expounds the social and personal causes of the image creation of Twain's novels, especially makes a more detailed summary about Twain's personal character characteristics with direct effect. To this end,in the second chapter of the same basic part, this article gives a general explanation of the life of Mark Twain's life and the basic conditions of American society, and conducts a more in-depth investigation and demonstration of Twain's personal experience, ideological concepts and even general personality psychology. Its purpose is to reveal how the life of the era and personal experience interact, and at the same time play a substantial role in the creation of Twain's novel image.Next,it is about the composition of the imagery art of Mark Twain's novels. This part is the most complete analysis and demonstration of a number of significant images after the preliminary distribution of the distribution, type, presentation and basic structure of Twain's novel imagery. This part of the content belongs to the focus of this article, which is carried out by the third, fourth and fifth chapters respectively. The purpose is to separate the imagery system of Twain's novels from the background of life and personal experience,so as to analyze and demonstrate its aesthetic connotation and symbolic meaning. The specific method is to study its internal structure, aesthetic function, and aesthetic meaning and aesthetic theme with lasting identity, and according to the actual results described in its image, the natural image, the image of the person, the image of the nation state are discussed separately. The core content of the concept of nature, humanity, and national and national consciousness, including morality and religious views,is analyzed and demonstrated. Finally,in the conclusion part of the full text,a brief summary of the aesthetic style characteristics, the status of literary history, and the value of artistic experience of Twain's novels is given. This part is the evidence of the formation of the above researches, and summarizes the specific aesthetic style and artistic content of its imagery system. The purpose is to draw the regular understanding of the imagery art and relevant conclusions in the overall style,in order to demonstrate the contribution and status of the imagery system in the history of American literature and even the history of world literature, and indicate the aesthetic status of the core elements supporting the aesthetic value of Mark Twain's novel art.
