Nowadays, science and technology are the driving forces of the development of the society.Papers and patents are two major carriers of science and technology.Papers make knowledge contributions to patents through the knowledge flow generated by patent citations. Most of the existing researches on the relation of papers and patents ignore the indirect citation relationship. This study introduces the idea of knowledge inheritance to uniformly measure the knowledge contribution effect generated by the direct and indirect citation relationship. From the perspectives of knowledge transfer step, time, and industry chain, this study proposed models as well as corresponding indicators. The lithium ion battery industry is taken as an example for empirical research. The main innovations and research results are as follows:(1)To comprehensively consider the direct citation and indirect citation relationships between papers and patents, the "paper-patent knowledge genetic model" was constructed. And through the network reconstruction and index establishment, the knowledge contribution effect of the paper on patents under different knowledge transfer steps is revealed. The study found that the knowledge contribution of papers to patent in the lithium-ion battery industry is mainly concentrated within the five knowledge transfer steps. The papers with the strongest total contribution of knowledge indeed have played important roles in the development of the lithium-ion battery industry, and it is easily ignored by the traditional method, which confirms the effectiveness of this model.(2)In order to explore the knowledge contribution time-varying effect of the paper on the patent field from a time perspective,a "paper-patent knowledge genetic dynamic model" was constructed.By constructing indicators, the in-depth analyses of the contribution life cycle of the paper in the patent field, the papers delayed recognized by the patent field and the corresponding wake-up literature are conducted.Through empirical findings in the lithium ion industry, the time delay of more than 80% of knowledge contribution intensity is greater than 11 years.22 typical delayed recognition papers in the patent field were excavated, and 9 wake-up documents of 9 important delayed recognition papers were further explored. It was found that the wakeup documents of these papers were all papers.9 important delayed recognition papers, can be divided into two categories, the first is the study of carbon allotropes, and the second is the insertion of lithium ions in the electrodes research on intercalation and deintercalation.(3)To study the knowledge contribution effect of the research topics related to the industry chain from papers to patents, the “paper-patent topic knowledge genetic model from the industry chain view ” is constructed. The study found that, from the perspective of the overall effect of knowledge contribution, the interactions among and within the electrolytes, electrodes, and battery management are the most active.Whether viewed from the knowledge contribution overall effect or from the time-varying effect of the past five years, the paper research topic in the field of electrode has a prominent effect on the knowledge contribution of the patent field. This study explores the knowledge contribution effect of the papers to the patents from the perspective of knowledge transfer step, time and industry chain to enrich the research perspective of the relationship between the papers and the patents. The conclusions obtained through empirical research on lithium-ion batteries can provide references for the innovation management in the value evaluation of papers and evaluation of scientific researchers in this industry.
