Competition in the high-end engineering field for countries in the world in the final analysis is the competition of engineering and technical personnel. High-level, applied engineering and technical personnel as the mainbody of innovation is the key strategic resource for the innovation-driven development of China. However, for a long time, the cultivation of Chinese doctoral education is mainly for academic talent, and the cultivation scale of applied talent is very small, which is not commensurate with the social demand. In order to adapt the needs of the construction of the innovative country, and promote engineering and technology progress and industry development, China started the doctor of engineering program in 2012. Discussion on the cultivation mode of doctor of engineering, and answering the two issues of "cultivate what kinds of doctor of engineering" and "how to cultivate the doctor of engineering", are conducive to improve the cultivation system of the doctor of engineering in China, and enrich the theoretical system of higher engineering education and professional degree graduate education of China.The theory of the doctor of engineering cultivation mode was discussed. The specific characteristics, driving force and the value of times of the doctor of engineering were summarized, and the connotation and characteristics of the doctor of engineering were clarified, and the relationship between the educational concept of the Big E. and the cultivation mode of the doctor of engineering was expounded. As the experience of the doctor of engineering cultivation in the United Kingdom, the United States and the Netherlands is more abundant, the cultivation modes of the doctor of engineering in these countries were comprehensively analyzed. Some experience worth to be learned by our country was summarized, such as clear objectives of the doctor of engineering cultivation, strict application evaluation system of the recruitment, scientific and perfect course modules for the doctor of engineering, distinctive requirement of the doctor of engineering thesis, deeply integrated university-enterprise joint cultivation mechanism, and sound system of the doctor of engineering management. Then, the status and problems of the doctor of engineering cultivation mode were comprehensively analyzed. The four stages of carrying out pilot work of the doctor of engineering cultivation were reviewed, and the enrollment objectives and conditions, the field and scale of enrollment, and the selection and admission process were analyzed in detail. The cultivation modes of the doctor of engineering in the electronics and information, advanced manufacturing, biology and medicine, energy and environmental protection were deeply researched with text analysis, and the features and existing problems of the doctor of engineering cultivation mode were summarized.Under the guidance of the educational concept of the Big E and based on international experience and the present situation of our country, the feasible options of improving the doctor of engineering cultivation mode of China were proposed. The cultivation objective is furtherly clarified, and that is to cultivate the recipients of the doctor of engineering into high-level, applied engineering and technical personnel who can lead technology advances by leaps and bounds and industry innovation and development. The cultivation specifications of the doctor of engineering was discussed from the perspective of competency, and the competency of the doctor of engineering was illustrated from the dimensions of knowledge level, skill level, professional value level, motivation level and trait level. Then, four aspects influencing the doctor of engineering cultivation mode were pointed out, including highlighting the scientific of enrollment, improving the multi-module-based interdisciplinary curriculum, high-end practice-oriented cultivation throughout the entire process and perfecting school-enterprise cooperation mechanism. The support system of the doctor of engineering cultivation mode can be built through establishing the education association of the doctor of engineering, the mechanism of win-win profit distribution, the mechanism of efficient resource sharing and also paying attention to engineering culture education, in order to improve the cultivation quality of the doctor of engineering, and provide reference for the smooth development of the doctor of engineering cultivation.
