Gastropathy is one of the diseases which can be treated by Tibetan medicine effectively. We can find many instructions about prevention and treatment of gastropathy in the Four Treatises. It is considered as a core instruction in the Tibetan medical text. If a physician can treat gastropathy effectively, the physician can be recognized as qualified Tibetan physician.Medical materials are very important for the treatment of gastropathy. By producing compound, the medical materials can work effectively. Because of this reason, it is very important to do research on the compounds for gastropathy. In this century, science can be divided into several different branches. Thus, it is valuable to take one part of Tibetan medical sciences as an individual research topic. Pharmacology of Tibetan medicine, which is directly associated with clinics, can demonstrate the characteristics of Tibetan medicine. Pharmacology, which is related to the treatment of gastropathy, is most important part of pharmacology of Tibetan medicine.During the research, it is important to recognize characteristics of achievements and development process in different periods. In my research, I made considerable conclusion of the achievements in the different period.Ancient times:In this article, through historical records and show forward self’s own views and try to find the first medicinal materials and disease in ancient timesThe Period of Reign of Twelve Tribes:In general, Tibetan historians and Tibetan medical historians paid very little attentions to the history of The Reign of Twelve Tribes (mnga’mdzad bcu gnyis). Thus, it is very hard to find any valuable reference on this topic. In fact, the history of The Reign of Twelve Tribes is not only important for Tibetan history, but also Tibetan medical history. In my thesis, I explore the life story of Tonpa Shenrab, the Bon Religion and Bon civilization, as background of The Reign of Twelve Tribes’history. In addition, I tried to prove that the first Dunhuang Tibetan medical document was appeared in this period. The Period of Yarlung:Tibetan historical document records a brief Tibetan medical history during Yarlung dynasty. It is stated that since the reign of Lha Thothori Nyantsen, the dialogue between practitioners of Indian medicine and Tibetan medicine took place. During this period, Chinese traditional medicine (zhong yi) was introduced into Tibet. Since then, those traditional medicines influenced the theory and clinical practice of Tibetan medicine. I believe that second, third and fourth Dunhuang Tibetan medical documents were created in this period. The Period of Tsen Po:There is no doubt that Tibetan medicine was developed greatly during Tibetan Empire. Under Songtsen Gampo’s order, many physicians from other regions or countries were invited into Tibet. It gave a great chance to broaden Tibetan native physicians’medical knowledge. From this period, Tibetan medicine has become more comprehensive and systematic medical science. The old Tibetan medical manuscript which is collected in the collection of the ancient Bon manuscripts from Gathang Great Stupa in Tibet Lhoka Prefecture, Yellow-edged Volume and King of the Moon were produced during the Tsen Po. I can find a large number of old orthographical and grammatical conventions in the medical manuscript from Gathang Great Stupa. Having based on this reason, it might be one of earliest manuscript of Period of Tsen Po. It might compose between the reign of Songtsen Gampo and Tride Tsukten. Having examined the compounds for gastropathy, it seems to me that the King of the Moon composed after composition of Yellow-edged Volume. I find that many important compounds for gastropathy in the Four Treaties were derived from those early texts. In Era of Fragmentation, politics, economy and military of Tibet were suffered by unrest. However, Tibetan medical science was not impacted by unrest. Tibetan medicine had developed during this period. I made conclusion for the achievement about compounds for gastropathy in this period. In my thesis, I address how compounds for gastropathy were inherited and invented in the Sakya, Phakmodrupa, and Gaden Phodrang administration, as well as in Era of New Tibet. In order to examining compounds for gastropathy, I studied the classification of gastropathy in the Four Treatises. It includes the gastropathy in the chapter of gastropathy and other chapters of the Four Treatises. This is first time to survey all gastropathy in the Four Treatises. The compounds for gastropathy in the Four Treatises are listed in tables according to Tibetan medical theory. I also investigated the functions of each compounds. In addition, I collected some important compounds for the gastropathy from the Four Treatises and other clinical manual of Tibetan medicine. It provides a good reference for young physicians and Gastroenterologist of Tibetan medicine. |
