Year 1927-1930 is an important transforming period for both the development of modern Chinese literature and the urban development of Shanghai. During Shanghai as a special city period, the municipal government speeded up the construction and carried out a systematic plan of the whole city, especially the "big Shanghai plan" which was put up in 1929. It was the symbol of a new stage of Shanghai's development. With the construction of Shanghai, the contemporary literature had also experienced a new transformation. In 1927, a large quantity of intellectuals and publishing organizations moved south to Shanghai area. From Beijing, an agricultural city to Shanghai, the metropolis, it had a great impact on the whole literature producing system. This dissertation takes the literature transformation as a principle topic and at the same time, put this topic at a large background of the city's transformation. The urban development's impact on the literature modernization is discussed in my research. And since the literature periodicals are the most basic issue in the system of contemporary literature, they will be the main focus of this dissertation.About the ''changing tide" of the periodicals caused by literature and the city's transformation, this dissertation will explore the historical reason and background of it. It will also analyze the detailed changes of the periodicals. In this way, the transformation of literature production system will be primarily mapped. And this process includes the literature institutionalization. The literature is gradually brought into the business and the political mechanism .It also includes the new groups of modern intellectuals in the new urban space. The professional trend of the intellectuals strengthened the new development of the personal associations under a new system. This dissertation will not only discuss the culture transformation in a macro view, but also in micro details. The changes of different type of periodicals in this culture change are the major focus in the chapters followed. It includes the change of person's publication, the new development of popular literature periodicals and the new urban culture fulfillment by Shao Xunmei, a representative of middle class intellectuals. I think it also contains a few important types of modern culture. They are pioneer culture, popular culture and elite culture. They have all made adjustments to the public literature market.Undoubtedly, it can widen our comprehension for literature modernity by reviewing the literature transformation in the view of city's development. For a long time, people attribute the modernization of Chinese literature to the western culture's impact. This makes it important for us to explore the occurrence and development of the contemporary literature in a native context. It is also important for us to rethink the academic system of contemporary literature.
