At the beginning of the 20th century, "science" (together with "democracy") marched across the ocean from the West to China. Its significance has, from the very beginning, gone beyond the science itself and turned to be the historic theme of China's efforts in social modernization. China's intellectual, with the expectation for the brighter future, took part in reshaping of the significance of "science", which acted as from modern knowledge(tool and technique), the most valuable knowledge or knowledge of various subjects, to a kind of ideology and value orientation, that is, scientism. Science, regarded as the universal "common knowledge" available in all fields, not only posed decisive influences on the modern China's ideology, but also emerged as a vital concept in China's discipline establishment and academic thoughts of modern meaning. Likewise, it has irresistible charm for journalism which is a newly-born discipline in China. From the macro perspective, this paper aims to explore and discuss the influence and infiltration scientism made in the establishment of journalism discipline and academic thoughts in modern China. From the micro perspective, it tries to present a complex in which journalism, as a pattern of modern knowledge, and science collaborate and knot together in many respects, such as the establishment and formation of the discipline paradigm and the movement of the ideology. Because science itself and modernity can't be separated, this paper has another revealed or concealed approach: By analyzing the construction of the hegemony status science occupied in journalism and academic thoughts, the paper tries to introspect the potential negative effects modernity and the various existent and on-going values brought to the journalism studies and think over the possibility of the journalistic concept of the harmony between humanities and science.Due to the research approach of the question history, this paper doesn't arrange chapters strictly according to the time and historic period, like other relevant researches do. It focuses on the major issue of scientism(modernity), and sees the 30-year journalistic academic thoughts history as a "historic text". It also arranges chapters according to the logic relations between questions and involve in the exploration from many different layers, which make it like covering of fan, striving to tackle one particular question in every chapter.Along the logical sequence of every chapter, this paper tries to tackle the following questions: How does the science ascend from rational tool to rational value in the thought, academic and cultural sphere in China at the first half of the 20th century. The gist behind the debate of whether there are theories or not in journalism represents that science is the justifier of modern journalism knowledge and discipline. In what ways the science could acquire the legitimacy and rationality in the construction process of journalism studies. How did science present itself as the basis of charting the scientific map in early journalism studies and construct the primaryresearch paradigm? What is the representative category of scientism in China's modern journalism thoughts and what are the conditions of its causes, reasons, forms and features? In China's modern journalism thoughts, evolution is the niche that different academic schools hold highly, and in journalism studies, especially in the journalism history research, how does the concept of evolution reflect the value dimension of scientism in the dividing of history, the selection of materials and the methods of evaluation, etc. At last, the paper introspects the questions that what kind of relationship, in the specific arena of journalism studies and discipline research, science and humanities should form, and whether the China's journalism research has lost its humanity and value concern in the context of scientism.
