Chinese traditional literary criticism and art criticism possesses unique value which can not be taken place of by western literature and art criticism. Though it is not as systematic and tight as western literature and art criticism, they own the manner of criticism that according to the experience ,and the model of criticism that is from image to image , such is much closer to the character of art, and is sill meaningful nowadays.The individual research about every kinds of Chinese traditional art criticism has been well developed. But the research that to treat the art criticism as a whole, and as the phenomenon which is different from literary criticism and western art criticism, is not enough, at least there isn't a book on the history of Chinese traditional art criticism now. So it is necessary for us to make a overall study on Chinese traditional art criticism, to analyze and to sort it out, then to conclude it's main character, and reveal the meaning in modern time.This article carry on the art criticism of Wei-Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and take it as the start of the research on the history of Chinese traditional art criticism. At first, this article analyzes the cause of Wei-Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties from the point of the base of practice, the source of thought, and the way it come into being; then elaborate the process of the music criticism, the painting criticism and the calligraphy criticism, analyze the works about the art criticism of Wei-Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties from the point of"criticism", and point out the standard of criticism, the idea of criticism and the method of criticism which be used; at last, makes a comparison between different kinds of art criticism and between the art criticism and literary criticism, and give a general view on the value and meaning of the art criticism of Wei-Jin and the Northern and Southern Dynasties.
