Plastic art refers to the art categories that the producers use specified substances to make the plain or stereoscopic forms. Since the unique of plastic arts of the Han Dynasty,"Han painting"and"Han calligraphy"are just only an abstract concept which cannot contain concrete art style exactly, hence the"Image art"and"character art"are proposed as the two most representative categories of the plastic arts of the Han Dynasty. Based on this, the present paper makes a vertical study and a horizontal research on the developing course and concrete works of these two categories by using the imagism, art stylistics and literature materials to promulgate its essence meaning. In the"four world"image system, Han image art joins the Confucianism of that time and the Taoists'spirit of existence together harmoniously, with its aesthetic features manifested as imposing and vigorous image creation expressing the plastic thoughts"knowing"and"feeling"and the concrete art forms of fullness and richness. The spiritual connotation of the art of Han character takes shape in the plastic conception of"ru"(resemble) and"xiang"(similarity), in the vigorous beauty of"shi"(energy)and"li"(force), and the pursuit of pure beauty of form. The plastic principle of the two is concrete and abstract respectively, correlated and complementary to each other, which all together represents the full manner how people in the Han Dynasty grasp the visualized world.Tracing on plastic practicing maneuver, the present paper discovers that the formation of mould essence stem from"big"and"small"cultural tradition."Small"tradition embodies the general thoughts and common beliefs of people at that time (conceptions such as filial obedience, Yin and Yang, immortal divination, and mystical Confucianism belief),"Big"tradition refers to the influence of classic thoughts of the Han Dynasty (mainly the thoughts of Confucianism and Taoism which are complementary to each other). One is common and the other is proper, whose relation is very intimate. From inquiry on"small"tradition, we can find the direct motive for mould maneuver; from inquiry on"big"tradition, we can find the final essence source of mould maneuver. The essence of mould maneuver can be emerged between them.Based on the distinctive explain and the synthetic inquiry of these two art categories and two cultural tradition, the paper notes that the spirit of plastic arts of the Han Dynasty contains the following three aspects: spirit of containment, romantic spirit and powerful atmosphere, which is the distinctive reason of art shapes'formation, and also the reflection of the youthful, enterprising"Great Han Spirit"delegated in the plastic arts. Extending from the conclusion, we can also find that plastic art spirit of the Han Dynasty is of the mould sense to the development of arts.
