In modern ages, Chinese history condition is very peculiar because societal political problems were outstanding, scientism was popular, and Marxism's materialism epistemology spread outside and so on. Religion's societal political function and the cognitional model which is different from science was regarded as the negative factor and magnified to be generic form, which establish the basic position that religion was denied and animadverted. During the May fourth period, Chinese hold high the banner of "democracy" and "Science"; religion was the opposite thought and was denied. In the modern age, because the national confliction and class confliction were all very projecting, the society function of the religion was projected. Religion was the tool not only which western countries used to penetrate China from culture, but also which the gerent used to govern and oppress the people. Religion conflicts with the view of modern democracy. From the point of "Science", religion was regarded as the represented things that rationalism can't accept. The character of religion is cranky, doctrinal, superstitious, regarded rational thought as prohibition. Religion is opposite to the science, which advocates rational spirit.Under the above thought and history conditions, my thesis focus on Liang Shuming, Feng Youlan, Xiong Shili and Helin's view on religion who are the representation of modern Neo-Confucianist in the early ages.Mr. Liang Shuming, Modern Neo-Confucianist's initial personality, agreed with religion fully. His definition about religion is the thing which transcends knowledge and is used to comfort emotion. Religion can explain reasonably the natural life phenomenon that include living, death and so on, and can comfort human's spirit world and emotion.
