This thesis conducts a special research on a famous linguistic work which is an investigation into the history of linguistic. It is made up of eight chapters, including the introduction.The introduction covers the definition of the major concepts involved in the thesis, namely, the inherited and new coined words, sound recording characters and meaning recording characters; the versions that the study is based on and the feasibility of the study; the criterion for deciding whether sound-shift relation exists and the basis to classify ancient sounds; the dialect section in Fang Yan; the present situation, significance, theoretical framework and ways of the research.Fang Yan has a history of about 2000 years. It is necessary to sort out the circulation of its editions and proofreading of its characters. The editions of Song, Ming and Qing dynasty are introduced in Chapter 2, including the outcome of the proofreading by the people of Qing dynasty and the present.Strange characters in Fang Yan, which haven't been specifically explained, are much-told stories in science history as well as an objective existence. They are also allusions in later literature. According to Yang Xiong Fang Yan Jiao Shi Hui Zheng by Professor Hua Xuecheng, the words in Fang Yan including strange characters are exhaustively analysed from Chapter 3 to Chapter 6, to authentically reveal the rules to record Fang Yan words by Chinese characters.Chapter 3 counts up the explained words and explaining words in Fang Yan. The documentary data to confirm the inherited and new-coined words are also explained and the confirmed inherited words as well as the words to be researched. The 295 words to be researched in form, sound and meaning are also explained relying on the documentary data of Han dynasty. Therefore, 107 new-coined words are confirmed. Last, Fang Yan words recorded by new-coined words are explained in different sections.Chapter 4 explores the explained words.
