Study on Compatible Regularity of Classical Prescriptions (Recipes of Shanghanzabinglun) based on Hypothesis of its Repeated PartsShanghanzabinglun (Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases) written by Zhang Zhongjing, a famous physician in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, is the earliest monograph, which has a complete principle-method-recipe-medicines system. Researchers have great interest in the phenomenon that several prescriptions and some part of recipes, composed of 2-3 herbs, are also found in other classical prescriptions (recipes recorded in Zhang Zhongjing's works). Now those repeated ones are named Fang Yuan. This thesis is aimed at gathering all the Fang Yuan composed of two herbs, to explore compatible regularity of classical prescription made up by Fang Yuan. Study on Fang Yuan will help the physicians use classical prescriptions more accurately and flexibly and be benefit for researches of other prescriptions as well.First, we established a database including all the classical prescriptions in Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases) and Jinkuiyaolve (Classic of the Golden Chamber and Jade Sheath), in order to wipe out recipes which is composed of the same herbs in the two books, and in which there is only one herb. Prescriptions derived from the original one with addition or reduction of one or two ingredients and composed of two or more formulae in combination will not be used in our research as well. After rejecting those recipes, we established a new database, especially for Fang Yuan's study.Second, by Matlab programs, we calculated how many repeated parts there are, which are made of two herbs chosen arbitrarily from the new database, and so are their frequencies. Analyze the relationship of rates between single herb and related repeated parts, for discussing the possibility of judging Fang Yuan by how often they are in classical prescriptions. Finally, considering repeated parts with theoretical significance according to TCM theory as Fang Yuan, we established the set of Fang Yuan and related prescriptions. After that we summarized the compounding rules of classical prescriptions by comparing the difference among the recipes with the same repeated parts. In the new database there are 173 formulas and 365 repeated parts that could be found more than twice. Taking frequency of repeated parts as main factor, we established a formula to reduce the ranges of Fang Yuan searching through a comprehensive consideration of frequency of herb and its related repeated parts, as well as how many herbs there are in a prescription, etc. There are not only random combinations without meaning based on TCM theory, some combination in several formulas do not exist according to general understanding of physicians in all dynasties as well. Removing these situations, we get 13 Fang Yuan which are prescriptions made of two herbs and 27 Fang Yuan which are repeated combination. These are from formulas:Guizhigancao Decoction, Jupi Decoction, Xiaobanxia Decoction (Shengjiangbanxia Decoction), Banxiaganjiang Powder, Banxiamahuang Pill, Shaoyaogancao Decoction, Zhishishaoyao Powder, Gancaoganjiang Decoction, Ganjiangfuzi Decoction, Zexie Decoction, Dahuanggancao Decoction, Gancaomahuang Decoction, Mulizexie Powder. These are just combinations:Guizhi-Shaoyao, Guizhi-Taoren, Gualou-Xiebai, Guizhi-Fuling, Banxia-Renshen, Banxia-Huanglian, Banxia-Huangqin, Ganjiang-Renshen, Ganjiang-Xixin, Xixin-Wuweizi, Baizhu-Fuling, Baizhu-Fuzi, Baizhu-Chuanqiong, Fuling-Zhuling, Huangqin-Huanglian, Guizhi-Fuzi, Fuzi-Xixin, Dahuang-Taoren. Dahuang-Mangxiao, Dahuang-Gansui, Mahuang-Xingren, Mahuang-Shigao, Danggui-Chuanqiong, Shigao-Zhimu, Chaihu-HuangqinThere are mainly two compounding rules based on Fang Yuan theory:one is that Fang Yuan with the same method of treatment reinforce the action through combination to adjust to the change of disease development, the other is that Fang Yuan with different method of treatment reinforce the action through combination because nature of the disease get more complicated. And the latter one is more common and valuable in clinical practice. We also find out that classical prescriptions are usually combined by several combination or Fang Yuan that having the same herb, which is making the structure of the prescription network-like based on the theory of Fang Yuan.
