(1) Study on Applications of EPDMApplications of ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM) were comprehensively investigated, including structure and properties of EPDM/polypropylene (PP) blend, mechanical properties and the ratio value of dynamic stiffness and static stiffness (Sd/Ss) of EPDM vulcanizates, structure and properties of EPDM/mica composites, properties of EPDM/ iso-butyl rubber (IIR) blends, as well as basic characteristics and application examples of EPDM. This will provide guidance for its future applications.Domestic-produced EPDM exhibited better toughening effect for PP1300, and a brittle-ductile transition region was observed at EPDM content between 10% and 20%. The characteristics of PP and EPDM content played remarkable effects on toughening for PP. The toughening mechanism was found to follow crazing-shear band. It was also showed that J3080P was superior to EPDM501A from Japan Co. in the toughening effect.It was found that Sd/Ss decreased as crosslinking density and foaming density of EPDM vulcanizates increased, as well as the amount and reinforcing effect of filler lowered.Mica could be uniformly dispersed in EPDM but a little reduction in width and arranged along the certain direction, and meanwhile EPDM/mica micro-composites were prepared. Mica showed good reinforcing effect, and dramatically improved the gas resistance and insulation property of EPDM.The introduction of EPDM can improve the mixing and extrusion properties but little influences in mechanical properties and aging properties, lowering the gas resistance of EPDM/IIR blend. 20/80 blend ratio of EPDM/IIR was suggested although permeation coefficient of blend was only 1/4 of EPDM when 40/60 blend ratio of EPDM/IIR was employed. Domestic-produced EPDM can replace imported EPDM to make EPDM/IIR inner tubes.(2) Study on Novel EPDM/Ultra Fine Vulcanized Powder Rubber BlendsNovel ultra fine vulcanized powder rubber (UFPSBR or UFPNBR)/EPDM blends were firstly prepared by melt blending. The vulcanization behaviors of this kind of rubber blends were studied.
