The Eastern Times, advent in Shanghai in1904,was one of Top Three in Shanghai. In1921, Mr. Huang Bohui took over it from the first manager Mr. Di Chuqing. Since then, changes were discovered. At the end of1920, the reform of The Eastern Times was utterly accomplished——a serious newspaper, which was interested in politics and literature and was popular in ’intellectuals’, was turned into a newspaper which was good at reporting social news, sports news and pictures, full of entertaining and leisure tones. It is the transition that the researcher aim to analysis in this paper.Inn1920s and1930s, Shanghai rocketed in the speed of urbanization, with rapidly increased population and economy and gradually sophisticated industry and facilities construction. Moreover, the yellow news also paid attention to the popular cases in Shanghai. This paper takes cases happen on Ma Zhenhua and Huang Huiru’as examples to demonstrate its sensationalization in continuous coverages of the popular cases as extension of’expressiveness’and deepened the meaning of’mass culture’.The sports news, also changed, from score reports to feature and daily life description. Sports became an important and fashionable thing in modern urban life in1920s and1930s.Daily life became more and more important in the process of urbanization——Private spaces received more attention, which based on the citizen’s consumption and egoism. This paper analyzes and exemplifies the sports news from three aspects:daily space, communication and consumption to conclude that reports in this field were starting to connect with ordinary life that also deconstructed magnificence and sanctity of sports. And the pictures turned from ’variety’ to ’only women’. Under the development of urbanization and modernization, the subject consciousness of women was strengthened, more attention was also paid to them.After1930, themes of pictures in the Picture edition were almost women, especially young students. The transition from ladies of quality to fabulous stars, and to naive, fashionable students exhibited changes in urban aesthetic standard in this metropolitan: simple, healthy and rich talent. In conclusion, no matter social news, sports news or picture edition, changes were taken place in this newspaper with paralleled with the process of urbanization.
