The Evolution Of The Structure Of Non - Syntactic Structure And Its Motivation And Mechanism

Grammaticalization research has always been a hot issue in academic circle, andlexicalization and grammaticalization of non-syntactic structure has been one of theimportant aspects. Though there are many discussions about non-syntactic structurewhich are involved with the subjective factors, many issues still have been left. Thisthesis aims to conduct a research on grammaticalization of non-syntactic structure,mainly dominated by construction grammar theory, with the help of the theory ofgrammaticalization, subjectivization, lexicalization, speech act theory, cooperativeprinciple and politeness principle and so on. The research problem is limited to theevolution of rhetorical form of non-syntactic structure and its motivation andmechanism, and function transformation of construction is selected as the entrypoint, based on which, this thesis will try and explore something new about thisproblem.There are seven chapters in the thesis.The first chapter mainly illuminates the research object, research significance,present situation of the related research and theoretical basis and the main contentand style of this thesis. In this chapter, the part of theoretical basis is about theintroduction of semantic hierarchy and invited inference, which present a detailedanalysis of semantic hierarchy and changing path, invited inference andconversational principles. Meanwhile this chapter also makes an introduction andreview on construction and grammaticalization based on construction, including therelevant research and universality of construction grammar, and the relationbetween grammaticalization and construction. The major part in this chapter is theanalysis of grammaticalization of non-syntactic structure, and the process and levelinvolved in non-syntactic structure is put forward.The second chapter is mainly about the analysis on grammaticalizationphenomenon: the transforming from rhetorical question into exclamation degree.this chapter mainly discusses Heqi and Hedeng which shift from rhetorical questionto exclamation and then to subjective degree adverbs in the transformation of function, and both of Heqi and Hedeng’s grammaticalization and lexicalization havegreat deal with their transformation of function of construction tone, which is paidlittle attention in current grammaticalization.The third chapter is mainly about the analysis on grammaticalizationphenomenon which is transformed from rhetorical question into admonishmentimperative. We pay more attention to modal adverb Hebi and Hefang in thetransformation of function from rhetorical question to imperative sentence.The fourth chapter is mainly about two typical discourse markers which areshifted from rhetorical question to discourse marker: Shuishuobushi and Shuizhi.Among them, Shuishuobushi is a typical form from rhetorical question sentence todiscourse markers; Shuizhi is a typical form from rhetorical question to discoursemarkers. They are identified marker and anti-expectation marker respectively. Areview of discourse makers is also involved in this chapter.The fifth chapter is mainly about the analysis on two conjunctions Napa andQizhi, which are from rhetorical question to correlative connection. Though there ismuch research about Napa, there are still some problems to be studied. While theresearch about Qizhi lags behind. In addition to this, the sketch about conjunctionresearch which are relevant with rhetorical question is insufficient.The sixth chapter is mainly about the variation and its further development ofrhetorical question marker. More attention will be paid to phonetic variation of He,evolution of the adverb Haozai, and the semantic dependence and non-syntacticstructure Qigan. In addition, a brief description about the evolution and variation ofother rhetorical question form has been also made.The seventh chapter mainly approaches the general and special items based onthe research results of the former chapters and the analysis of the evolution andmechanism of grammaticalization of non-syntactic structure of rhetorical form. Thelast part is about conclusion, a summary about the main results, the possibleinnovation and deficiency of this study.The innovation points of this chapter are as follows:1. Semantic and pragmatic function should be paid enough attention based on the whole focus on construction and grammaticalization. Analogy mechanism wasput in a high position in past grammaticalization research. It is indeed a slope ofevolution in line with grammaticalization from reality to imagination, from concreteto abstract. However, for the construction, reanalysis on the function should not beneglected, especially in the process of construction semantic and pragmatic change,which is non-substitutable. Such reanalysis has great effect on grammaticalization ofnon-syntactic structure of subjective factors, and this is what we lack in the presentresearch of Chinese grammaticalization.2. In this study, we put so many interface problems such as grammaticalizationof non-syntactic structure, lexicalization, subjectivization, markerlization andgrammaticalization of pragmatic principles, in a specific syntactic constructionframework and then conduct research from multi-angle and multi-dimension,research like this is not common.3. This thesis is based on construction framework of rhetorical question, andadverbial elements which are all from rhetorical question are selected as researchobject. This research breaks the routine that the subclass research of adverb is basedon the specific morpheme. Uniform analysis is made from the perspective of functiontransformation, which, on the one hand, is advantageous to proven the functiontrend of construction framework; on the other hand, it would be of more value toexplore the universality and specific items in the process of evolution and so far suchresearch is still rare.
