BackgroundTissue engineering has been recognized as a viable solution for repair of tissue defects. Ideal engineered tissues should be non-toxic, biocompatible, biodegradable and angiogenic , etc, among which, angiogenic function is still a challenge to us. Therefore, the enhancement of the angiogenic potential of implantable biomaterials has received much attention recently.. Collagen is one of the major component of natural extracellular matrices with high biocompatibility, biodegradation without toxic byproducts. Heparin, well-known and time-honored antithrombotic drug, was also found to regulate angiogenesis. Further, it has high affinity to varies kinds of angiogenic growth factors, such as bFGF, VEGF, etc. Based on these knowledge, collagen matrices immobilised with different amount of heparin by non-toxic crosslinking reagent EDC/NHS was designed in this study. With the modifications of variety of collagen matrices, their characterization of pore size, degradation degree, free amino groups , moisture content and increased angiogenic potential were evaluated in order to adapt the collagenous matrices to specific requirements in the field of tissue engineering.
