Customization is now considered as one of the most powerful strategies to best serve the individual requirements of customers with industrial products. In order to design and fabricate customizable products faster while assuring satisfactory quality, a remote customization system (RCS) is presented and developed to facilitate some of the aspects in design-by-customer processes. The research adopts customization technology, knowledge-based engineering (KBE) and grid technology to exploit a developing process of new product. It promotes the design and simulation process of customization product, and avoids plentiful tedious developing work. Furthermore, it improves the efficiency of product development and design quality, and saves the cost.Design process plays the key role in product life cycle. The KBE theory is applied in design process, and the three factors of KBE, including knowledge representation,knowledge acquisition and knowledge reuse, are discussed. The representation of product design knowledge employs the Object-Oriented Representing Method (OORM) to express the complete parameter of product, independent parameter of parts, design experience, facts and rules, etc. The frame structure is adopted to represent the configuration of product structure tree. The design knowledge is stored in model library, database and rule library.
