Most conventional methodologies for mechanism and machine design are based on this constant-input-speed precondition. However, this report proposes an alterative concept named as"variable-input-speed mechanisms". Its objective is to improve mechanism performance by varying the speed trajectories of the input link actively. This report is devoted to presenting a definite theoretical concept and a systematic methodology for variable-input-speed mechanism design. Chapter 1 introduces the concept and the research backgrounds of variable-input-speed mechanisms. Chapter 2 describes the fundamental theory of variable-input-speed mechanisms, including system construction, design procedure and specific solution program. Chapter 3 deals with kinematic design of variable-input-speed mechanisms, including design criteria and methods developed for controlling output motion of mechanisms. Chapter 4 deals with dynamic design of variable-input-speed mechanisms, including design criterion and methods developed for improving dynamic characteristics of mechanisms. Chapter 5 deals with vibration design of variable-input-speed mechanisms, including a novel design method presented for reducing vibrations in flexible/elastic mechanisms. Chapter 6 expands the concept of variable speeds to the design of non-circular gear linkages. Chapter 7 expands the concept of variable speeds to compensate speed fluctuations in motor driven mechanisms. Chapter 8 concludes this report and point out the directions of future research on variable-input-speed mechanisms. The concept of variable-input-speed mechanisms is an innovation in the field of mechanism and machine theory. It has great potential for theoretical investigations and practical applications. This report presents a fundamental theoretical framework for variable-input-speed mechanisms. It can be further modified and/or expended for studies in depth and/or width.
