Ecological condition and environment in arid areas of northwestern China are fragile, which may be worsen by development of water and land resources. It is very necessary to understand and analyze problems which would be occurred during and after the process of water and land resources development by developing and analyzing relative models so as to give suitable suggestions and plans. In this dissertation, characteristics and potential of water and land resources in arid area of northwestern China are analyzed, The paper explains the current developing style of water resources and points out that interrelated evaluation and prediction models on water and land resources to be developed can give effective technical support to solve ecological and environmental problems at present. Models in this research relate to three aspects, namely the soil water, the groundwater and the soil salinization. Firstly, models of soil water balance and its vertical transfering, which connected with salinized soil treatment in irrigation areas and based on the research of dynamic parameters of soil water, are built. They are badly needed for the development of coupled models of soil water and groundwater; Secondly, models on groundwater dynamic condition coupling with soil water and groundwater are developed by the support of theoretical theory, GIS and Remote Sensing technology; Thirdly, model of one-member sensitivity evaluation of soil salinization on the platform of GIS and double-member sensitivity analysis model based on Genetic Algorithm and Back error Propagation Artificial Neural Network(GABPANN) are developed, to evaluate the state of regional soil salinization and analyze the sensitivity of factors that affect soil salinization, by analyzing and having full acquaintance with the characteristics, forming mechanics and driving factors of soil salinization in arid area. Fourthly, based on the Remote Sensing Information Model, model of soil salinization is built tentatively to predict soil salt accumulation quantitatively. Models mentioned above are used and verified with data in typical arid area-Shule River Watershed, and the results show that the projects carried now, mainly with large scale water resources and soil land treatment, have certain disadvantages to some extent, however the negative effects are local and temporary and the overall ecological and environmental conditions will become better and in a state of well circulation. Generally speaking, soil water, groundwater dynamic and soil salinization models built in this paper may meet the demand of solving key problems in water and land resources developing process in arid area, and can be used extendly to certain extent with similar condition.
