This paper firstly puts forward background and significance of research, that is, tries to explore new design theory by use of biological genetic engineering for reference to support innovation design and design automation, and improve CACD power. Secondly it sums up the current research of biological genetic engineering and application in non-biological field, introduces the state-of-the-art of domestic and international research in CACD, and furthermore proposes the problems remained in conceptual design.From the angle of design innovation, the paper has established the design theory based on PGE according to R&D (Decomposition and Reconstitution) theory and biological genetic engineering principle. The following similar relations can be proposed: Gene in biology —>Product Gene(PG) and Organism —>Product after a systematic study of the similarities between the innovation design and biological genetic engineering. Moreover, we also put forward PG's working mechanisms of "replication", "transcription", "translation" and "reverse transcription". Study on mechanical product design automation theory and development practice have resulted in some design principles such as "Functional Surface" principle, "Generalized Locating" principle and "Growth Design" principle based on PGs. Functional Surface principle makes use of Functional Surface as a carrier of the information including geometrical and functional feature to solve the process of function-structure mapping relationship. "Generalized Locating" principle is the core of solving the structure question, and "Growth Design" based on PGs is the matrix in which PGs express. These principles are the important parts in design theory based on PGE.In technical research, the paper has put forward four kinds of technologies based on PGE theory, such as PGs obtainment, PGs amplification, PGs recombination and PGs expression. PGs obtainment is the process of extractingthe PGs from existing product. The paper also introduces the database technologies to structure gene library of PGs so that target gene can be indexed from the gene library according to requirements to recombine target gene and carrier gene. PGs amplification is the expansion of PGs information related. PGs recombination refers to the design process: firstly get the carrier PG through isolating bad PGs, find out target PGs indexing PGs Base, and finally recombine carrier PG and target PGs according to the PGs recombination rule. PGs expression is to reflect the genetic information of products in process of structural design. Thus PGs can determine function and structure characteristic of products. Accordingly PGs are "transcribed" by design scheme into conceptual architecture and that conceptual construction is then "translated" by detail design into solid.Previous theoretical study and corresponding technologies have resulted in the establishment of tool software system PGE-DARFAD, which is based on product growth design platform DARFAD system. PGE-DARFAD has expanded such function module as PGs obtainment, PGs base construction, PGs amplification, PGs recombination and PGs expression, etc. Finally, we introduce an example of vise fixture based on PGE, analyze and summarize three kinds scheme, in order to illustrate the effect of system.
