The dissertation, on the basis of the discussion about the definition, characteristics, connotation and affecting factors of water resources carrying capacity (WRCC) and the researches on the relation between WRCC and sustainable development (SD). puts forwards that WRCC should be named exactly as sustainable water resources carrying capacity (SWRCC). The research of SWRCC should build firstly a watershed SD index system supported by water resources system. With this index system, we can study, appraise various watershed development models and distinguish the models which accord with the demands of SD, discuss the token indexes of these models, find the models whose SWRCC are maximum or which suit the researched watershed well. Two types of index, population and life quality, are selected as the token indexes of WRCC, which not only reflect the innate character of WRCC, clear the conception of WRCC, but also simpliy the indexes and make possible to describe WRCC mathematically as an envelope. The dissertation constructs the index system, introduces the coefficients of development, coordination, fairness, and the coefficient of SD, which is composed by the former three and can reflects the SD overall strength of watershed, brings forward the quantative criteria ofIn order that the research of WRCC is based on the good watershed ecology and environment, the dissertation, according to the ecological appropriate theory, builds the logarithm normal distribution model about the relation between the growth of natural vegetation and the depth of groundwater; based on this relation model, proposes a quantitative method of ecological water requirement (EWR) of natural vegetation in arid area, which utilizes the results of RS technique and the spot testing data of vegetative physiology demand. Compared with the spot investigation and other related researches, the model and the method proposed here is rational and correct and can be used in other similar area.Chapter 5 maks a case researches taking the Heihe River Basin (HRB) for example, recommends the optimizing schemes, gives the analysis about the sustainable development strategy in HRB. This case research illustrates that the theoryand the method proposed in the dissertation are feasible and practical.
