Salen metal complexes became one of heat points of coordination chemistry because of their applications in optics, electrochemistry and magnetism. Their synthesis, characterization, structure determination, optics, electrochemistry and magnetism had been studied.H2salen (N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine)) and H2mosalen (N,N'-ethylene-bis (3-methoxysalicylideneimine)) were selected as the ligand and their lanthanide, 3d-4f heterodinuclear, Heteropolynuclear complexes were systematically studied.Firstly, the history and progress of the synthesis and structure of the Salen lanthanide, 3d-4f heterodinuclear, heterotrinuclear complexes and their properties were concisely introduced and summarized. Furthermore, general situation of molecular magnetism and mechanism of luminence were introduced.A series of H2salen lanthanide complexes [Pr(H2salen)(NO3)3(CH3OH)2]n (1), [Ln(H2salen)1.5(NO3)3]n (Ln = Pr (2), Nd (3), Sm (4), Eu (5), Gd (6), Tb (7), Dy (8), & Lu (9)), Ce(salen)2 (10);Heterotrinuclear complex: [Cu(salen)(CH3OH)Eu(NO3)3]2 (11) had been prepared by self-assembly method. We synthesized seven mononuclear tetradentate H2mosalen lanthanide complexes Ln(H2mosalen)(NO3)3 (Ln = Nd (12), Sm (13), Eu (14), Gd (15), Tb (16), Dy (17) & Er (18)) which form 3d-4f heterodinuclear complexes [Cu(mosalen)Ln(NO3)3·H2O] (Ln = Nd (19), Sm (20), Eu (21) & Gd (22)) and 3d-4f-3d′heteropolynuclear complexes [{Cu(mosalen)}2Pr(H2O){Fe(CN)6}]2·2.5H2O (23) [{Cu(mosalen)}Ln(H2O)3{Fe(CN)6}]2·6H2O (Ln = Sm (24) & Gd (25)).All the metal complexes had been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, TG and X-ray crystallography. The structure of H2salen lanthanide complexes had two kinds of structures: H2salen lanthanum(III) complex prefered to afford a 1D chain structure. H2salen praseodymium(III) complex could give rise to both 1D and 2D topology structures. Other H2salen lanthanide(III) (Ln = Nd-Lu) complexes favored to yield a unique 2D network structure. H2salen 3d-4f heterodinuclear complex exhibited the same 0D topology structure as reference in which the ratio of 3d and 4f is 1. All the H2mosalen mononuclear complexes exhibited 0D topology structures. H2mosalen 3d-4f heterodinuclear complexes had the same 0D topology structures as reference in which the ratio of 3d and 4f is 1. H2mosalen 3d-4f-3d′heteropolynuclear complexes exhibited dimer topology structures which were different with the reference. The luminence and molecular magnetism of the metal complexes had been studied. Characteristic luminescence of Sm(III) and Eu(III) ion was observed in H2salen lanthanide complexes but Tb(III) ion cannot found. On the other hand, Only characteristic luminescence of Tb(III) ion was observed in H2mosalen lanthanide complexes but Sm(III) and Eu(III) ion cannot found. Complex 6(Gd) and 15(Gd) showed a weak ferromagnetic interaction between Gd(III) ions, while complex 22(Cu-Gd) showed ferromagnetic interaction between Gd(III) and Cu(II) ions, complex 25(Cu-Gd-Fe) showed ferromagnetic interaction between Gd(III), Fe(III) and Cu(II) ions.
